Do I need a permit for a shed?
  • For a shed 100 sq. feet or less, with a roof line of less than 12 feet, no permit is required and it may be placed in the side or rear yards no less than 10 feet from the property line.
  • For a shed 101 sq. feet up to 200 sq. feet, with a roof line of less than 12 feet, no permit is required and it may be placed in the side or rear yards but it must meet the setback requirement applicable to the zoning district where the property is located.
  • For a shed 201 sq. feet or greater, or higher than 12 feet, a building permit is required.  It must be placed in the side or rear yards and it must meet the setback requirements applicable to the zoning district where the property is located.
  • Any work done on a property that is within a community Watershed Overlay Protection District (WPOD) (e.g. Cobbett’s Pond Watershed) may require a separate application and permit, and you need to check with the Code Enforcement Officer.
